Europan is organised once every two years in some fifteen to twenty European countries. Together, these countries make real sites available for which young designers can make a plan. Architecture, urban design and landscape are recurring aspects in the assignments that the municipalities and developers present to the participants. By offering such a variety of assignments Europan encourages multi-disciplinary teams to enter the competition.
For the designers Europan 12 commenced on 18 March 2013 and the entries had to be submitted on 28 June 2013 at latest.
Sixteen countries made forty nine sites available, of which three were situated in the Netherlands: Havenkwartier in Assen, Hoendiep in Groningen and VROM/Koemarkt in Schiedam.
In total 165 teams registered for one of the Dutch Europan 12 sites and 132 of them actually submitted an entry. There were 53 entries for the site in Assen, 31 for Groningen and 48 for Schiedam.
The adjudication took place in two stages. During the first stage part of the jury selected together with representatives of the sites a total of 23 plans from the 132 entries. These were discussed during the international "Forum of Cities and Juries" in Paris, after which the jury selected two winners, four runners-up and one special mentions.
The competition results were announced on 13 December 2013.
